Open-Head Wire-Feed Orbital GTAW Training
Advanced on-site orbital welding training for oil & gas, nuclear, shipyards, and industrial facilities requiring code-compliant, high-integrity welds.
Delivered on-site and customized to your operation, this training is designed to close the gap between theory and execution. Your team learns to confidently run open-head orbital systems using your actual equipment and materials — reducing rework, improving weld quality, and ensuring performance under real production demands.
Open-Head Wire-Feed Orbital GTAW Welding Course
Specialized Training for Industrial Piping Applications
This advanced 5-day course is designed for welders, welding engineers, QA/QC professionals, maintenance technicians, and project managers in the oil & gas, nuclear, and heavy industrial sectors. Delivered by an AWS/QC1-CWE/CWI/ASNT Level 2 Visual Inspector, the course provides deep technical training in open-head, wire-feed orbital GTAW welding for pipe systems ranging from Schedule 20 to 120 and diameters of 2" to 8".
Participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the open-head orbital GTAW process and its advantages over manual and closed-head systems. The training emphasizes industry-specific applications and code compliance for standards such as API 1104, ASME B31.1/B31.3, ASME Section IX, and RCC-M.
Course Overview
-
Process & Application Fundamentals
Covers system walkthroughs of major orbital welding brands (e.g., AMI, Polysoude, Liburdi), pipe schedule considerations, heat input control, and application focus for oil & gas, nuclear, and process piping. -
Materials, Gas Chemistry & Welding Variables
Hands-on exploration of alloys including 304/316L stainless steel, Inconel, carbon steel, and P91. Training includes gas blend behaviors (Ar, Ar/He, Ar/H₂), arc control strategies (AVC, oscillation, wire feed), joint design, and root gap management. -
Weld Programming & Pipe Preparation
Development of weld procedures (WPS), full parameter setup, fixture alignment, purge planning, and multi-pass programming. Real-world challenges simulate prep conditions across different alloys and thicknesses. -
Welding Execution, Defects & Code Compliance
Live welding practice on carbon and stainless steel with focus on defect identification (porosity, lack of fusion, undercut), root cause analysis, flaw simulation, and real-time parameter adjustments. Emphasis on inspection methods and adherence to codes such as API 1104 and ASME standards. -
Qualification, Certification & Jobsite Readiness
Final weld performance tests, visual and borescope inspections, completion of weld documentation (WQTR, weld maps), and certification issuance. Includes guidance on further endorsements (e.g., NADCAP, ASME IX orbital).
KEY TOPICS INCLUDE
-
Advanced orbital weld programming: AVC, oscillation, current modes, wire feed optimization
-
Metallurgy of high-performance alloys and their weldability
-
Shielding gas selection and its effect on arc behavior and penetration
-
Precision pipe preparation, purge planning, and fit-up techniques
-
Identification and correction of welding defects per code
-
Jobsite simulation for field-ready performance
Outcome
Trainees complete the course with advanced skills in orbital welding for high-integrity pipe systems, qualification credentials, and practical readiness for critical field applications in nuclear, oil & gas, and industrial process environments.
Key Skills & Competencies

What Is Open-Head Orbital Welding?
Open-head wire-feed orbital GTAW is an advanced automated welding process designed for thick-wall pipe, multi-pass welding, and critical applications requiring filler metal.
Unlike closed-head systems used for thin-wall tubing, open-head systems provide:
Higher deposition rates
Greater flexibility in pipe size and material
Full control of the weld puddle and arc
Capability for field and retrofit welding
This makes it the preferred solution for code-critical piping systems and high-performance industrial environments.

WHAT YOUR TEAM WILL LEARN:
TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO SET UP, PROGRAM, AND EXECUTE OPEN-HEAD ORBITAL WELDS WITH CONFIDENCE IN REAL PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTS. THIS TRAINING FOCUSES ON PARAMETER CONTROL, WIRE-FEED PRECISION, JOINT PREPARATION, AND DEFECT IDENTIFICATION—ENSURING YOUR TEAM CAN PRODUCE CONSISTENT, CODE-COMPLIANT WELDS ACROSS A RANGE OF MATERIALS AND PIPE CONDITIONS.
Who Should Attend
This training is designed for companies responsible for high-integrity piping systems where weld quality, repeatability, and compliance are non-negotiable.
Industries include:
-
Oil & Gas facilities and pipeline systems
-
Nuclear power and energy generation
-
Shipyards and marine fabrication
-
Data centers and high-capacity cooling infrastructure
-
Food & beverage processing (sanitary systems)
-
Pharmaceutical and chemical processing plants
Ideal for:
Welding engineers, QA/QC teams, supervisors, and contractors responsible for production welding and inspection.
WHY IT MATTERS
Even with automation, orbital welding is not a “set it and forget it” process.
Without proper training, teams risk:
-
Failed inspections and rejected welds
-
Lack of fusion and penetration issues
-
Excessive heat input and distortion
-
Costly rework and project delays
As industry standards tighten, the ability to properly program, execute, and validate orbital welds is becoming a critical differentiator.
